Restoration Project

Arnos Vale Cemetery is first and foremost a place of remembrance and spirituality and this will be at the forefront of all decisions made to protect and enhance the Cemetery.

It is estimated that over £6 million is needed for the conservation and regeneration of Arnos Vale Cemetery

The future regeneration of the Cemetery will be guided by the need to:
  • conserve and protect it in its original purpose as a place of rest
  • widen its use for educational and conservation purposes whilst protecting its original use and historic landscape, and ensuring safety, decorum and decency
  • protect areas where diverse wildlife habitats have become established

Use of Buildings

All buildings will be restored and re-used.  A significant amount of work is needed to restore them to a usable condition
A number of options are being considered for their future use:
  • Visitor/Education Centre
  • Family History Centre
  • Cemetery Office
  • Room of Remembrance
  • Volunteer Centre
  • In addition, it is hoped that a restored chapel will be available for services

Restoration Plans

NEWS UPDATE

West Lodge will be opening in late October, providing a permanent base for the Trust to manage the restoration and daily operations, a visitor information point and a home for the books of remembrance.

From 2006 to 2010 we plan to:

Restore and protect the natural landscape.

Wildlife thrives in Arnos Vale. We will conserve the natural habitats and repair and reopen the paths through the wilderness making much more of Arnos Vale safe and accessible

Repair the monuments, starting with those which have special importance.  Some of the graves are special because of their architecture and others because they commemorate lives the lives of extra-ordinary local people.  26 monuments have been identified for special attention (listed monuments).

Reopen the Non-Conformist and Anglican Chapels to become an education centre and provide space for exhibitions, concerts and services.  We will provide a base for children to learn about nature conservation and history which will also be available to the community.

Regain Arnos Vale’s splendour for everyone to enjoy.
